7 Tips to Start a Strong Home Practice

by Shannon McCasland E-RYT 500

When we don't succeed with a new habit, our lack of motivation is usually the first to be blamed. Motivation is definitely important, but when it comes to developing a consistent routine, habits and environmental cues always win. Set yourself up for success early with these tips:

Set Up Your Space

Create a space in your home that makes you want to practice. You don't need a room dedicated to yoga but maybe you have a space where you can keep your mat and props ready for you. Where is there a sunshiney window or quiet space where the kids and dog won't find you? Wherever it may be, make it yours with cozy comforts like pillows, candles and mood lighting.

Start Short

When 30-60 minutes every day feels impossible, be realistic about the time you have and start short with a 5-, 10- or 15-minute practice. You can always find 5 minutes and everytime you show up you'll be strengthening your new habit and experiencing how great it can feel. If you show up for 5 minutes, you'll probably be hooked and find yourself wanting to stay longer!

Schedule It

Make an appointment with yourself and keep it. Look at your calendar each day and pick your time to practice. Don't give up if that time doesn't work - just try a different time and you'll feel great when you cross it off your to-do list!

Start a Challenge

Set a goal for yourself and use a visual tracking system like a calendar to track your progress. Make it fun for the whole family and see who can complete the most days over the next month. Pick a reward for yourself if you meet your goal or compete with your family for the prize each month.

Get Dressed

When you wake up in the morning or finish your work day, get into your workout clothes right away. That one simple step is often enough motivation to get you onto your mat rather than sinking into the couch.

Recruit a Friend

New habits are always easier with accountability. Can you think of a friend with similar goals? Check-in with a text or phone call daily to help eachother start and stay on track.
